The HLPF 2017 opens today to review the progress towards achieving the 2030 Agenda

NEW YORK – July 10th, 2017 – The High-level Political Forum (HLPF) 2017 is kicking off today in New York under the theme “Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world” – a core component of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The HLPF oversees the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), under the auspices of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The follow-up and review process at the global level complements and supports national and regional reviews. This year, 44 countries have volunteered to present their national reviews and plans to achieve the SDGs.

This year’s meeting of the HLPF takes place from 10 to 19 July and will gather Member States, UN agencies, civil society, the private sector and other stakeholders. It will reviews the successes, challenges and lessons learned from implementing a set of seven selected SDGs: SDG 1 – No poverty; SDG 2 – Zero hunger; SDG 3 – Good health and well-being; SDG 5 – Gender equality; SDG 9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure; SDG 14 – Life below water; SDG 17 – Partnerships for the goals (to be reviewed each year).

During the meeting, the participants will review the implementation of the targets that were set in these SDGs. They will also discuss high-impact actions for the coming years – for example, they will explore how to achieve policy coherence across the domains of relevance to the goals. Furthermore, participants will examine national policy approaches to better understand what has worked, thus providing insight for decision-makers.

UNIDO’s contribution to the HLPF 2017

In April 2017, the President of the Industrial Development Board (IDB) submitted substantive inputs to the President of ECOSOC to showcase UNIDO’s contribution towards advancing the 2030 Agenda in general, and, in particular, the SDGs and their targets that are most relevant to UNIDO’s mandate. The report and transmittal letter of the IDB President are available at the United Nations Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform.

As the specialized agency of the United Nations mandated to support countries in achieving inclusive and sustainable industrial development, the UNIDO contributes not only to SDG 9, but also to all other SDGs under review at the HLPF 2017. UNIDO’s participation at the HLPF 2017

UNIDO also plays an active role at the HLPF 2017. On 13 July, UNIDO will participate in the side events “Inclusive Green Economy Approaches for Advancing the SDGs and Promoting Shared Prosperity” and “ICT for sustainable development: How digital solutions can drive progress towards the SDGs”.

On 17 July, UNIDO will participate in a side event on “Recalibrating market forces: How inclusive, greener finance and economies and initiatives like PAGE can accelerate SDG achievement”.

On 19 July, UNIDO will organize – together with UN OHRLLS, Austria and Zambia – an event on “Accelerating Inclusive and Sustainable Development in Landlocked Developing Countries (LLCD) through Structural Transformation: Pursuing Policy at the Nexus of Infrastructure and Industrialization”. The event will examine how landlocked developing countries can develop policies and implement programmes that will fast-track the industrialization process and ensure the achievement of the 2030 Agenda, through a synergistic consideration of the nexus between infrastructure and industrialization.
